The Home Ministry has refused to divulge details about the release of those who have been detained in Jammu and Kashmir since the August 5 move to strip the state of its special status. Among those who have been detained are former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, several other politicians, separatist leaders, and others.

The government said on Wednesday that the detentions were made to prevent any untoward incidents and breach of peace in the aftermath ofthe abrogation of Article 370. The MHA has also said that a total of 5,161 people, including stone pelters and chief ministers, have been taken in preventive detention since August 4.

However, it further stated, "Since these detentionshave been made under statutory provisions by the concerned magistrates based ontheir satisfaction in each case, it is not possible for the government to giveany timelines for their release."

The Home Ministry also said, "Government of Jammu andKashmir has further reported that in order to prevent commission of offencesinvolving breach of peace, activities prejudicial to the security of the stateand maintenance of public order, 5,161 persons, including stone pelters, OGWs,separatists, etc were taken into preventive custody in Kashmir Valley since 4thAugust, 2019. Out of these, 609 persons are under preventive detentions."
